John C. Dearie is a lawyer and former New York State Assemblyman from the Bronx. A Democrat, he served in the Assembly from 1973 until 1992. He won the Assembly seat for the 85th District in 1973 after Anthony Mercorella went to the State Assembly. Dearie ran for New York City Comptroller in 1981, but was defeated by the incumbent, Harrison J. Goldin in the Democratic primary. Shortly after, redistricting placed Dearie in the same district as Republican Guy Velella, which now covered Parkchester and Throggs Neck. Dearie would defeat Velella in the 1982 election. Dearie would serve 10 years, only for redistricting to hurt him once again by placing him in the same district as Stephen B. Kaufman, which now covered Throggs Neck, Westchester Square, and Co-op City. This allowed for the creation of a new Hispanic seat covering most of Dearie's old territory in Parkchester and West Farms, where Peter Rivera won. Dearie decided to retire from politics after 1992 to focus on his career as lawyer.
